For years tripods came in two types: pan heads and ball heads. Each came with their tradeoffs. Pan heads are optimal for glassing, allowing for easy gridding so no spot is missed. Ball heads on the other hand are ideal for shooting off of. This is because unlike a pan head, it is easy to level a rifle on a ball head even if the tripod is set up on uneven terrain. Historically, hunters have been forced to sacrifice either glassing or shooting performance. In 2025 Wiser Precision threw this paradigm on its head with their release of the Ridge Warden hybrid tripod head.
How Does it Work
What makes the Ridge Warden unique is that it is a hybrid pan head and ball head, allowing the best of both worlds. This is possible by having a ball head with ball bearings that run through tracks on the ball to make it function like a pan head. With lighter weight optics like binoculars and spotters the Ridge Warden functions just like a pan head. This is ideal for glassing.
However with something heavier like a rifle, the ball bearings can jump out of the tracks and function as a traditional ball head. This allows for quick and efficient leveling of the rifle even if the tripod is not completely level. This is very important for extended range shots. At longer ranges, even a few degrees of rifle cant will cause significant windage errors downrange. The Ridge Warden allows fast levelling without needing to fiddle with the tripod legs to get them perfectly level.

Specifications
Impressively, the Ridge Warden accomplishes its innovative design this while weighing only 3.3 oz. I have mine mounted on an Aziak Backcountry Lite tripod. This allows for a sub 2lb package that is excellent at both glassing and seated shooting. Conveniently, the tension is adjusted by a simple twist lever on the side of the tripod head. There is a lightweight carbon fiber handle to allow for smooth panning while glassing.
Field Use
The specifications are great in on paper, but how does it stack up in the field? I’ve had the opportunity to run the Ridge Warden tripod head for a spring bear season and countless days at the range. I’ve found the Ridge Warden to absolutely deliver on its promise to offer excellent glassing, along with a much better shooting experience than a pan head design.
Glassing
As a glassing head, the Ridge Warden is excellent. The ball bearing system works as advertised and panning is smooth. There is very little slop in the head and it is easy to smoothly grid across the field of view. On cheaper pan heads such as the standard Vortex pan head, there is a little bit of ‘bounce back’ after you move the optic to look at a new area. Not so with the Ridge Warden. The head easily handles the weight of standard binoculars and even heavier optics such as the Kowa 553 and the much heavier Swarovski ATS 85.

Shooting
As a shooting head, the Ridge Warden is a huge improvement over shooting off of a pan head, although it is not quite as robust as a heavier designated ball head. One complaint is that the maximum tension could be a bit higher for shooting with heavier rifles. This isn’t a huge issue for shooting seated where you can support the rear of the rifle by using your pack as a rear rest. However, if you were to mount this head on a larger tripod that allowed for standing shooting, the lower tension would prove challenging.
Another complaint with the Ridge Warden from a shooting standpoint is the tension adjustment lever. It is very small and is often blocked from doing a full rotation when a rifle is clipped in to the ARCA clamp. This means either removing the rifle or tilting it forward in order to adjust the tension. This is likely a concession made to allow for the ultra light weight. However, I would happily carry an extra ounce if it meant having quick and easy tension adjustment while clipped in to the tripod head.

Closing Thoughts
In closing, the Wiser Precision Ridge Warden is the best all-purpose tripod head on the market for the backcountry hunter. It gives tremendous glassing performance at a scandalously light weight. Additionally, it gives around 90 percent of the performance of a designated shooting ball head without compromising on glassing ability. With some small adjustments to the tension adjustment system, this would be the perfect tripod head for my use case. As it stands, it’s still an excellent tripod head and the best available for what I do.
