TOP rifle precision theory is a method developed by Bryan Litz to predict the approximate accuracy of a rifle system with a few simple inputs. I’ve referenced it in several articles. As such I decided to make a calculator to easily determine what a reasonable expectation for a build is. A few caveats, this theory only applies to bolt actions. Also, dedicated benchrest rigs with specialized twist rates, bullets, and handloading practices can beat the model.
I’ve also scaled the large sample size TOP rifle precision theory prediction for more commonly fired group sizes. The predicted group size for a given number of shots is a predictive average. Yes, you can shoot a 0.2 MOA 3 shot group every once and a while through a given rifle. However, over the long haul the predicted 3 shot group size is what you should expect as the average of many 3 shot groups from a given rifle system.
